چکیده
An 88-year-old woman was admitted with a huge bilateral pulmonary embolism and acute renal failure. On physical examination, a well-defined irregularly pigmented plaque 20 · 40 mm with black, brown and pink hues and an irregular border was noticed over the umbilicus (Fig. 1). A clinical diagnosis of malignant melanoma (MM) was suggested, and surgical excision planned. However, the patient’s prognosis was poor; she was very dyspnoeic, with oxygen saturation levels of < 75%, despite the treatment for pulmonary embolism, thus we chose to perform a biopsy to confirm the diagnosis, with the intention to proceed to treatment once the patient recovered from the embolism.

Pigmented Bowens disease mimicking malignant Melanoma: A case report
Pigmented Bowens disease is an in situ squamous cell carcinoma, which is seldom reported in white patients. Herein we report a 20-year-old woman with type III skin, who had this lesion on the fourth finger of her right hand, similar to superficial malignant melanoma, clinically. Although dermoscopic evaluation could be helpful, correct diagnosis of non-melanotic origin is done by histological e...
متن کاملAcral melanoma with hyperkeratosis mimicking a pigmented wart
Acral lentiginous melanoma (ALM) of the sole sometimes has a hyperkeratotic appearance and mimics a pigmented wart. We report a case of an 81-year-old woman with an ALM on the left sole with hyperkeratosis. Due to its presentation it was difficult to make a correct diagnosis at the beginning. Finally we noticed several small, pigmented macules around the wart-like lesion with the parallel ridge...
متن کاملMalignant Melanoma of the External Auditory Canal:A Rare Entity
Introduction: Although malignant melanomas (MM) are common in the head and neck region; primary malignant melanoma of the external auditory canal (EAC) is rare. Case Report: We present the case of a 50-year-old symptomatic man with a malignant melanoma of the external auditory canal, which clinically masqueraded as a haemangioma. The patient subsequently developed extensive loco-regional me...
متن کاملRegressing seborrheic keratosis - clinically and dermoscopically mimicking a regressing melanoma.
The diagnosis of seborrheic keratosis is a clinical diagnosis. In a certain percentage of cases, differential diagnosis between seborrheic keratosis and malignant melanoma is difficult. We describe a case of regressing seborrheic keratosis simulating malignant melanoma. Clinical, dermoscopic and histopathologic examinations were performed for the occurrence of an asymmetric, irregularly demarca...
متن کاملPrimary Intracranial Leptomeningeal Melanomatosis
Primary intracranial malignant melanoma is a very rare and highly aggressive tumor with poor prognosis. A 66-year-old female patient presented a headache that had been slowly progressing for several months. A large benign pigmented skin lesion was found on her back. A brain MRI showed multiple linear signal changes with branching pattern and strong enhancement in the temporal lobe. The cytologi...
متن کاملAnatomic Pathology / LICHENOID TISSUE REACTION IN MALIGNANT MELANOMA
Lichenoid tissue reactions can occur in malignant melanoma and may cause partial regression of the lesion. We studied a series of melanomas to determine how frequently lichenoid tissue reaction obscures the diagnosis of malignant melanoma. We retrospectively reviewed 342 cases of invasive malignant melanoma and melanoma in situ from the head, neck, chest, and back. Of the 342 cases, 23 (6.7%) h...
